Rendezvous at the Old Lighthouse - Point Loma

There is a feeling I cannot explain,

as though I have known you

since a time

memory itself can no longer recall;

as though this meeting

is not our first.

Do you hide behind this feeling,

knocking softly

upon the doors of my heart

without asking to be let in?

Are we strangers

brought together

by a passing moment of admiration,

or lovers

lost in the crowded corridors of time,

whom the years

have finally returned to one another

after weariness and forgetting

had nearly erased their names?

And is our meeting here,

beneath the light

of this ancient lighthouse,

nothing more than chance

or have you come

to restore to our story

what the passing years

stole from it?

No…

I came because some meetings

are written

long before we arrive at them;

because destiny, at times,

gathers two wandering hearts

into a single poem.

I came

to tell a little

of what longing

left behind within me;

to embrace the self

that never learned

how to deny

the ache of its own yearning;

and to let the sea

carry the echo

of my words.

I shall remain

a trace

lingering in a quiet corner

of your thoughts,

and somewhere deeper still…

within your heart.

You will search for me

in the blue of this sea,

among the silent passages

of this old lighthouse,

and among the flowers

that stand watch

over the grass

without a word.

I have never believed

that women resemble one another.

I first discovered

your uniqueness

in the light

that lives within your eyes.

Every woman

has her own silence,

her own delicate details,

and some things

were never meant

to be repeated.

I may find familiar features,

perhaps even familiar words,

but never

the same feeling

never another soul

that echoes yours.

You are a woman

who resembles no one.

Within you

is a gentleness

from which even the seagulls

might learn to fly,

and a presence

that quietly transforms

the face of every place it touches.

And when you smile,

the moment itself

grows warm.

As for your tenderness

it is like the shelter

we spend a lifetime seeking;

like the rain

when it finally arrives

after a long,

thirsting season.
