Description:

A soldier stands guard at his homeland’s border after crossing blood-soaked battlefields from Tunisia and Italy to France and Burma. Yet beneath the familiar sky, he hears a different call—the call of peace and homecoming. His rifle and uniform now feel like burdens, while his thoughts return to the beloved he left behind amid famine, poverty, floods, and suffering. He does not know whether she or their home still remains, but he holds on to the hope of returning.

He expects no medals, flags, or public honour—only the joy of the woman he loves. After fighting for distant causes, he longs for the simple victory of returning home and sharing a life with her. He sees himself as a lamplighter who illuminates the streets for others while his own house remains shrouded in darkness. And in that final image, the poem transforms the returning soldier into a symbol of countless human beings who serve the world while quietly longing for warmth, love, and light in their own lives.
