May the spirit of eighteen descend upon this country— may this nation be filled with the courage, idealism, fearlessness and creative energy of youth.

The poem is not simply about being eighteen years old. “Eighteen” becomes a symbol of youthful courage and rebellion—the willingness to challenge injustice, accept sacrifice, face danger and create something new.

The final line, “May eighteen come down upon this country,” is therefore especially significant. The poet is essentially wishing for a nation in which the fearlessness, idealism and revolutionary energy of youth awaken in its people.
